Accounts Assistant Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Purchase Ledger duties such as processing of purchase invoices and bank reconciliations
  • Credit Control duties such as chasing debt via telephone as well as dealing with sales invoices and credit notes
  • Credit checking of new and existing clients
  • Dealing with accounts queries via telephone and email
  • VAT preparations
  • Assist finance manager with management account preparation
  • Other adhoc admin as required by the finance department

What Skills & Experience Do I Need?

There are many paths to becoming an Accounts Assistant:

  • Accounting Qualifications such as AAT
  • University degree in accounting or other finance discipline
  • Apprenticeship in accounting
  • Sage 50, Xero courses (common accounting systems)

However, formal qualifications aren't the only requirements. You will also need to demonstrate:

  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills necessary to understand and analyse financial data
  • Knowledge of accounting software’s such as Sage 50
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • A sharp eye to detail as the smallest error if not spotted
